Deletebeautiful photos..none of my irises are anywhere near to blooming yet. The soft pink one is gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI have had most of my Bearded Iris given to me by friends, one type I did buy are the Japanese Iris which are yet to bloom - still very tight in bud.

DeleteGood for you - it's only through amazing willpower that I am sticking to just two photos! I wonder how long it will last... Your varieties are lovely - I only have the purple one (top left). Largely ignored but blooms faithfully!
ReplyDeleteI want to be a well behaved blogger but with my Iris I just couldn't stop at 2. I no longer baby any of them, although I do feed at least twice a season, just before bloom in early Spring and in the Autumn. Some years they reward me with weeks of bloom, some years not at all - very sulky are Iris in my garden!
DeleteOut of interest ... are yours deep in the ground, or do they have a lot of root exposed? Dad told me he'd heard on the radio that iris like to be in very shallow soil.
DeleteAnyone else out there call them flags?
Lady Ella: My Bearded Iris (as picture here) have a lot of the rhizomes showing, but my Japanese, Siberian and "Flag" varieties do not. There is another type of Iris that is quite short but looks like the Bearded, it also is set deeper. What I know to be the "Flag" variety (Quebec's provincial flower in blue) is a Pseudacorus type of Iris. Does this help or make sense?

ReplyDeleteI find the growing and blooming time comparison SO interesting. I would have thought in Britain that Iris would have been ahead of ours. This is why I am really liking blogs and blogging, all the learning.

DeleteThese are simply gorgeous! I don't think I've ever seen one like that pink one---it's particularly wonderful!
ReplyDeleteThank you Karen. The pink iris had quite a few blooms this year and seemed to have a longer than normal bloom time - much to my enjoyment.

ReplyDeleteHello Barbara, thanks for dropping by. I just read that Iris is Greek for rainbow which is so appropriate - I think I will now look for a red Iris.

ReplyDeleteThanks Missus Wookie, Iris are quickly becoming a favourite. I was put off a few years ago when I got a clump from a neighbour that was full of what turned out to be Iris Borer - nasty little beast, hard to get rid of.
