Best Possible News Of The Day

Possibly the best news I read this morning was on my F/B feed page from Downton Abbey!  To refuse a mince pie/tart is bad luck & that if you have a mince pie/tart every day of the Twelve Days of Christmas you will have good luck in the new year - you just have to remember to make your wish known on the first bite of each pie/tart.  I can do this, I need to do this!

So today will be the mince pie/tart baking adventure.  Only 2 questions; (1) brandy or not, (2) full top or star top?

  1. It might be hard to believe, but I've never had a mince tart or a piece of mincemeat pie.

    1. Karen, last year was my first pleasant sampling of mince tarts - I'm a convert & I indulge often. I don't make my mince from scratch, I just thank E.D. Smith for that pleasure ;)

  2. ..and what about the shortcrust/flaky pastry debate? I do full top, but the tops quite often lift a little bit and the mincemeat leaks out, leading everyone here to nickname them "zippies" because they have unzipped themselves

    1. Oh, I never thought to use any other type of pastry & I know only how to make one kind -I'd be kicked off in the first heat of Baking Championship. I think my pastry is flaky & maybe not that intentional .. zippies for Uncle Dave (right?)

  3. That's a new one! I'm not a massive fan but I'll take one if they're on offer. Twelve? Could I stomach twelve? I'm always up for a challenge! (But if my wish is to lose weight tho..?) :o)

    1. I wasn't a fan, I was raised with suet based mincetarts (face even now scowls) - it was last year that I tasted my first sweet mincetart - hooked. I made mine very small for the express purpose of 12 wishing ones for after Christmas, I think called tartlets & it turns out my pastry is a short pastry.

  4. My sister does a star top with a small piece of cheese under the lid. I know it is a 'sweet' cheese but just can not recall the name of it at the moment.
ANY mince pie is a good mince pie in my book - I even enjoy shop bought ones.
I quite like the mincemeat to 'leak' as it means there is a generous serving of it in the pie :)

    1. I went with stars & never thought to add cheese - umm that's a good idea. I have a recipe somewhere for mincemeat cheese cake-never made it though.
