My 5 today are some of the fungi about ... I am keenly aware of fungi especially since I was told fungus prone foods are a major cause of my digestive woes.
While they cause me harm, I still find them a fascinating creation, much in the same way weeds are pretty just not in my garden, or in my case maybe tasty but not in my digestive tract.
"out of damp & gloomy days, out of solitude, out of loveless words directed at us, conclusions grow up in us like fungus, one morning they are there, we know not how & they gaze upon us, morose & gray. Woe to the thinker who is not the gardener but only the soil of the plants that grow in him" ... Friedrich Nietzsche
Very exotic!
ReplyDeleteThey are aren't they Chris. The dreary days have made their whites stand out & easier to capture on "film". I am trying to find a puff ball mushroom before someone who can eat does ...
DeleteNice championing the fungus. There is a lot of it around and, as you have proven, it can be fascinating. I mowed at least four diffent kinds out of my grass yesterday, and wondered what they all were. One of our walk leaders last week was a fungus expert and happily picked, tore and even ate a few of the specimens we found. Oh to have the knowledge!
ReplyDeleteI cannot believe the variety in my own yard - this is a bumper crop year. Yes I would like to know more about the wild edible ones. Several people have puff ball mushrooms in their yard & apparently they are delicious when roasted.
DeleteThere are certainly some unusual varieties there. I wouldn't dare to try and guess which ones might be edible - that would be a bit like Russian roulette!
ReplyDeleteI agree about not chancing eating, I've seen far too many Midsomer Murders to know that mushrooms are a number one way to poisoning someone. But I do admit they are really interesting to see.
DeleteI love the variety! There are so many different kinds.
ReplyDeleteThanks - I found a huge patch of large white ones this morning on a walk ...
DeleteI've just spotted a load in our garden today and thought "I must photograph those"!
ReplyDeleteWe have had several days of fog & drizzle which actually make the fungi/mushroom grow like crazy & the defused light is excellent for photography adventures.
DeleteSuch a unique grouping! When we were staying in Denali National Park, there was a nightly guest speaker at the resort - a professor whose specialty was fungi. He's even developing a replacement for Styrofoam out of fungi.
ReplyDeleteI like the professor's idea of using fungi for replacement of the nasty styrofoam.
DeleteThat one growing out of the tree looks like a skull/head of a critter! I agree that fungi make interesting subjects for photography, some of them are quite beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThe fungi growing out of the tree knot got really big before Mr Man snapped it off. It's amazing some of the shapes they, the fungi, take on.
DeleteYou have some great ones there. It's amazing what shapes they make. I saw some great ones the other day and didn't have my camera. I was amazed that when I went back a few days later a lot of them had gone black and smelly.
ReplyDeleteI completely forgot about 5 in 5 until several days later.
Please let me know if you're looking for a article author for your weblog. You have some really great posts and I think I would be a good asset. If you ever want to take some of the load off, I'd love to write some articles for your blog in exchange for a link back to mine. Please blast me an e-mail if interested. Many thanks!
