We received many online applicants, so reading through these online resumes (CVs) has been consuming all of my time. It's quite eye tiring to read on line. I only print out those that I am actually interviewing.

I have, in person, interviewed 3, telephone chatted with 3 & so far the only one that ticked 9/10 boxes decided she doesn't want part time. Boo - she would have been perfect. My second choice said she did not think she was ready to take on such a job. One applicant & I had an appointment set but she never showed up or called. SOOOO rude & unprofessional. So I start again today interviewing 3 more possible candidates. I have to pick one by Tuesday so they can start on Wednesday or Thursday of this week for their first of 3 training sessions & be up & ready for their shift by April 4th.
What has baffled me most is the spelling errors - "hello spell check" & inconsistent information they share, much of what they give as address & contact info is one way on the covering letter & something totally different on the resume (CV). I would also find that not too many actually took the time to read the posting we offered. It clearly states casual part time & yet so many were taken aback when I spoke with them. I think many applicants are only sending to fulfill their EI (employment insurance) requirements.
I will go through this again in August, when student 2 of 3 returns to school - she's going to be a para-medic. For me, this was suppose to be only a casual temporary fill in for a previous employee but it certainly feels like I have put roots down & I am not sure how I feel about that. But I will say no more for now.

DeleteVery frustrating. Why do people apply if it's not what they want but I guess your surmises are correct.
ReplyDeleteSpelling and grammar is such an issue. Both of my daughters have trouble in this way. One is very dyslexic and the other has some issues too. I suspect at school spellings and grammar was sometimes overlooked for them to get the flow on content on paper. Has this helped them? I don't know except certainly the very dyslexic one is not inhibited in her writing which she may have been if she had been continually picked up on spellings that she may never grasp. Nevertheless it doesn't stop her being a bright capable girl.
As for spell check well I frequently go through the spelling and grammar for my other daughter when she writes assignments. Spell check does not pick up homographs so is not the complete answer.
So back to your applications. Is it just slovenly writing and lack of proof reading? Ok I ramble but what I am trying to say is that there could just be a talent for the job hidden behind that bad spelling!
I agree that facts on paper don't always reveal the talent with that person, that's why I like a telephone chat & in person interview.

ReplyDeleteI have a friend who is interviewing for a receptionist job at the minute and it sounds like one of the hardest things she has ever had to do while running her own business. Most of her applicants don't seem very motivated at all, which is very hard to understand these days. Best of luck with it!
Thanks Sian. I believe that I finally have found two ladies that should fit the role & team nicely. Of course one never knows until you actually work with them. I am also frustrated by the lack of motivation which makes me feel really old today
DeleteLove your first photo; it epitomizes spring in the north! I'm guessing ours aren't even visible after 30" of snow last week. I agree that spelling errors are simply inexcusable for a resume or cover letter. I would expect not only spell check but a real live proofreader as well! And not to show up for an interview? Rude is exactly the right word. Good luck this week finding a good candidate for the job!

ReplyDeleteOnline applications have definitely affected the type of unsuitable applicants we get now. As you say, most are just applying because they have to apply to so many places to get benefits. Good luck, the right person is out there somewhere!
Late spring is my favourite (May June for us). I hope to be gone from this job before I have to go through this process again. SO frustrating, I could weep.

ReplyDeleteThanks Sandra - I cannot believe what people say during interviews. One lady said that she would not take the job because she wouldn't report to someone younger than her! Lucky her, I did not offer the job to her.

DeleteHaving given up work (with an employer) when my daughter was very sick as a baby, I have little experience of CVs. My son found lots of great advice online when he came to write one and apply for his first job. He put a lot of care into it.

I think with SO many candidates out there all applying for the same job, your CV (resume) needs to stand out & I am sure your son's will stand out with not only his care but attention to the details. I am currently getting mine updated & really give a close eye to it.

ReplyDeleteMy hubby has the same issues when he's looking to hire someone - and it's usually for professional, full-time positions for experienced & degree-ed personnel!!!! :(
I long for the warmer weather to sit on my patio again with tea & just be. I finally was able to wade through & find two (I hope) very suitable candidates. I just cannot believe how little people care about presenting themselves in the best possible light ... or maybe it's because our job offer is not that interesting.
