This week, my final Pairs entry for 2015 are a couple of stone / rock walls.
One residence has used these huge boulders, found on the property & each one about 244 centimeters (8-9 feet) in height, to build their perimeter - it clearly says "keep out".
The second residential stone / rock wall is more decorative in nature but still using all the rocks found on the property. I think this wall is quite charming.
Is that bottom one a dry stone wall? Quite the art form and both so much more attractive than a fence or railing.
ReplyDeleteboth are dry stone walls, not an ounce of cement in either. To build such walls is a talent & skill. Locally we have a lot of dry built stone walls because of the farming & the nature of the area after the glacier retreat. The big rocks in my back garden are the remnants of an old farm stone wall.
DeleteI like the second wall but find the first one, with the massive rocks, a bit threatening. As you say, it clearly says 'keep out'!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Eileen,the first wall is just that a wall, because there is nothing forcing them together I would worry that one day one would roll away, they could crush a car.

DeleteThose big rocks remind me of the sort you see around to keep Travellers and Gypsies parking up! What gets me over here is the stones people put on "their"
ReplyDeletegrass verge to keep cars off but a real tyre rippers if you catch them!
I'm quite sure we don't have any Travellers or Gypsies to keep out or at least that I am aware of, (lol). I guess since these boulders were dug up on the property when the house was being built, they thought the rocks could be put to good use. The neighbourhood park has large rocks edging the verge to keep dirt bikes & ATVs out, doesn't work, they just drive around.
Deletewow- that first set of boulders is scary...and I am surprised that it is legal! The second set is very cute!
ReplyDeleteI wonder about the safety of these boulders. Their property is fronted on a busy highway, maybe they had hoped the boulders would block the sound.

ReplyDeleteI have to admit Karen I think the wall in the first photo is really ugly & does nothing to set off the house which is quite nice. In the second photo the wall & the house it belongs to are both gorgeous. Happy New Year.
DeleteFirstly wishing you a very Happy 2016. The contrast in the walls is very striking. Did they shape the rocks that were dug up for photo one? I'm amazed that rocks like that were in easy digging reach, they look like they should be on a mountain!
ReplyDeleteLouise I think it was really big steam diggers that dug up these rocks - the area is full of such massive rocks - left overs from the age ice apparently, so these rocks are all natural in size & shape. Happy New Year to you & yours.
