Memorandum Monday - October 10th

Linking in with the other Monday Memo writers through our hostess, Sian, at: From High In The Sky

What's new from the patio?   This weekend we have put all the patio furniture away, emptied all the flower pots & had our last barbeque of the season.  A some what sad time of year.

I bought myself a new set of  pottery dinner ware that is Autumn & Thanksgiving inspired.  I thought a treat to celebrate all the extra hours I have put in at the clinic.  I am most thankful they were on sale.  I like to use leaves as a theme for Thanksgiving rather than pumpkins as I am not a fan of orange for decorating. Mr Man kindly set the Thanksgiving table for me, while I was busy preparing a new to me recipe for pumpkin cheesecake.  A recipe that Queen Elizabeth II ate 3/4 of her portion when served to her at Winnipeg's Dubrovnik Restaurant in 1984.

We were putting some garden debris into a wooden compost barrel in the field behind us & I notice that there are at least 50 sunflower plants growing beside the compost barrel & all along the edge of the fence!  All the seeds I feed the chipmunks, squirrels & blue jays have been hidden for future nibbling but apparently forgotten & are now growing.  It is too late in the season to expect any flowers - our weather is expected to drop to 0 tonight.  (sad face).

There was also some large mushrooms growing.  I was hoping for some puff ball mushrooms but I am not sure these are edible.  Too many Midsomer Murders to risk trying ...

We had a Sunday drive to see the changing leaves on a new to us side road.  The new sign was indicating a lowering of the speed limit on the road.  That speed is kilometers not miles per hour.

As we sit down to our Thanksgiving dinner today I am going to leave you with the thought that I am most thankful for elastic waistbands.  Hoping everyone has a wonderful week ahead of them.

PS: yeah to our national baseball team - The Blue Jays.

  1. That dessert must be good if the Queen ate most of her portion, she's renowned for not having a large appetite .
Maybe she needs some of those elastic waisted trousers!

    1. I think the Queen needs to show great restraint with all the fabulous meals prepared in her honour, she is my diet hero. I bet she doesn't need elastic waisted trousers.

  2. Your new plates are lovely. I still have to empty my flower pots and planters. We woke up to some serious frost this morning!! That cheesecake sounds very good. -Jenn

    1. We also had a very hard frost last night, thankfully any of the annual tenders that I plan to over winter were up against the house & kept warm all night. The cheesecake was ok, not overly sweet I could not taste the rum that the recipe called for!

  3. Elastic waistbands sound good to me. And I can't believe I just said that.

    Happy Thanksgiving to you!

    1. A good disguise of a long sweater top over the elastic waist pants - plus the sweater hides a lot of the dinner sin (col). I will not tell if you won't. :)

  5. Gorgeous final shot! happy Thanksgiving to you and yours. I was chatting with someone yesterday who lives in Vancouver (she's British born) and again I mentioned that I think about emigrating to Canada ...

    1. Oh yes do come to Canada. I cannot help but think I live in one of the best countries in the world. Vancouver (BC) is so very different from where I live - oh the mountains that can be seen from anywhere in Vancouver. I have lots of family out there. If you would like any brochures sent to you about emigrating, I can round out & send ...

    1. Cubbies is the Chicago team; right? I am not a baseball fan but when we get a winning team the news is full of it (lol). I like taking photos of all the trees in the Autumn so many shades & colours.

  7. Beautiful fall colors; hoping to see the same this weekend while we are in Canada. LOVE your dishes. I've admired several sets with leaves this fall, but am afraid of the reaction if I were to bring more plates home until I rid myself of the dishes we aren't using anymore!

    1. I do hope Niagara on the Lake gives you a good showing of leaf colour. I must admit my dishes are making me very happy. They will be put in the same cupboard as my Christmas dinner set. Thankfully I only ever never 4 of each :)

  8. So much to comment on! A very sad looking patio. Lovely new China and I don't blame you for a bit of a treat after extra hours. Unusual to hear what the Queen has eaten! Elastic waistband sounds perfect. The colour of those trees.... Then last but not least...... Happy Thanksgiving!

    1. I have made the "Queen's" cheesecake, it was light & not sweet but not sure I would do again. Thankfully my dinner pants had an elastic waist - dinner was so good. Thankfully lots of left overs for tomorrow.

  10. Glad you had such a great time. I thought when you said cheesecake you meant the layered one - was going to ask after the new recipe but if it's not worth repeating I won't. I too have been sorting out the garden ... general tidying and replanting. Put cyclamen and winter pansies/violas in the tubs and pulled up lots of bedding plants. Some of them were looking very scraggy, others still good and a shame to disturb them but I have to remember, one frost and they will be gone anyway. Also seeing lots of autumn red here but not yet to the extent of yours.

    1. I think the layered cheesecake is the best. I might try a chocolate pumpkin cheesecake which is a new one but I think for waist benefit it will wait for maybe New Year's Day.

  11. Happy Thanksgiving! I didn't know that Canada had a different date! Thanks for popping by my blog - it's lovely to see old friends again! You've captured some lovely colour there on your new road. We're off to Boston at the end of the month and hoping we are not too late for the fall colour.

    1. Oh Boston does have some beautiful colour, not sure what their summer was like so you might still get some spectacular colour. Look forward to seeing your posts about Boston. Safe travels.

  12. Pretty new dishes, and that last photo is just stunning - I imagine it was all the more so in person. (And does QE2 not finish her desserts as a rule?)
