Memorandum Monday - December 5th

Good morning to all the Monday Memo writers & linking in with our hostess, Sian at her blog:  From High In The Sky

What's new from the patio?  Most of our activities have been inside, although there were a few final moments out there on Sunday.  A few last minute things to get stuffed into the garden shed before the snow comes blowing in.  Oh I ache to be out there again, sitting on the patio with my tea & a good book (insert heavy sigh here).

Thursday saw me with a new big decision to make.  Let me give you some background to that decision.  I was preparing to send off my few homemade Christmas cards for December 1st - my attempts are/were nothing like some of those gorgeous stamped cards I see being created on "your" blog ... anyway, I was licking the envelopes shut when I noticed red on the envelopes,  then I noticed that there was some sort of red drool from me!  I had cut my tongue on an envelope & now I was bleeding all over the cards I had made.  My decision - do you think anyone would notice or care about a streak of red on the card/envelope?  In the end I had to toss.  Tongues bleed easily & a lot plus it hurts when you get a paper cut on it.
Card Before Attempts To Send
A new way to count down the season - I made this little clipboard Advent Countdown which I am keeping on the mantel in the bedroom, so every  new morning I can remember to change.
This weekend saw us attending a new to us live Christmas concert Saturday night, The Barra MacNeils - a Canadian Celtic group.  We enjoyed the old world carols sung in Scottish Gaelic along with a few jigs.  While I could not understand the words to those sung in Gaelic, several of the carols are favourites so I know the jest of the song & the music, ah the music takes me to that place of Christmas anticipated magic.

I spent most of Sunday afternoon baking squares (bars) & cookies; 3 types of squares (bars) & 2 types of cookies.  This is definitely a hygge activity - the house smelt amazingly & I felt all domestic.
I have a new pair of Christmas socks.   I personally do not think there is any such thing as an ugly Christmas sweater, but these socks pay homage to that belief.

I will see you later with 5 in 5 on the 5th.   I hope everyone has a great week - my Christmas cards are going to be late this year.

  1. Ouch, I've had a paper cut on the tongue too - and in my case, I was paying bills - so it was doubly hurtful!! I bet your tongue was soothed by those tasty treats. Hope you have a good week

    1. Ouch to paying bills & a cut on the tongue. Of course it felt 10 times bigger than it was in actual size & since no one could see, it was hard to play for sympathy.

    1. The socks are getting lots of comments from patients at work. The tongue has repaired (thankful for a healthy body) the card creation begins again. This time when sealing I will use a sponge!

  3. Oh no, having to throw away those cards after all the work... I don't know if I would notice a streak and if so I would probably have assumed dye/dirt from other cards while in transit. But knowing the truth I would probably have made the same decision in your shoes - very disappointing for you. I'm sure people will be pleased to get your greetings however and whenever ... really, cards aren't "late" till after 25th!

    1. I am going to go with that the Universe has found me a better card pattern to follow. I had visions of a recipient developing some horrible blood born disease from my blood "soaked" envelope travelling in the public sectors.

  4. Ooo, hope the sore tongue is soon back to normal. I agree that home baking is definitely a hygge moment ... and so is eating all the cookies afterwards!

    1. The tongue was quite sensitive to hot or cold for a couple of days. I have given most of the baking away so as not to be SO tempted to over eat the treats.

  5. Ouch! That can indeed be surprisingly painful. It reminds me of the time I picked at a rag nail while sitting an exam at school, so every word I wrote dripped blood onto my exam paper as I swiped my hand along the page. I'll never forget wincing at the thought of the poor teacher marking that!

    The cookies sound delicious :)

    1. Talk about blood sweat & tears over an exam. I was just was SO surprised how much my tongue bled. I think my frustration on the cards part was I really really wanted to be crafty with my cards but it turns out I found a lovely simple card pattern to follow for round 2.

  6. Oh, how frustrating! Funnily enough a friend just posted on Facebook that her daughter had written out her Christmas cards and then exclaimed, "Oh no, I forgot to write who they were from." Have a great week.

    1. I think that is funny about your daughter's friend - I have received a Christmas card that was not signed & for the life of me I had NO idea who sent, all my regulars were accounted for.

    1. I thought my tongue was 100% but today when I sipped rather quickly a too hot tea - OUCH, not totally healed. I like fun socks, subtle but effective :)

    1. Thanks Alexandra. I do like to bake & I wish I had the metabolism that allowed me to eat more so that I could bake more, alas it has to be seasonal :{

  10. OUCH! Paper cuts are awful, and I can't imagine one on my tongue! I used to have some "cute" Christmas sweaters when I was teaching, but most of them are gone now. No socks, either. Might have to fix that.

  11. I have a dear friend who managed to get a paper cut inside her nose ... yep, inside. I asked her how she did it. "Oh, it was easy," she said, "I was in the same room as the paer and suddenly I have blood on the paper and my nose" You are in good company

    1. Thanks - I don't feel so clumsy now. I once got a cut from a crochet hook which has caused me not to try knitting - those needles are quite sharp!

  12. Wow, that's quite a list of New things! A paper cut on the tongue sounds ouchie!
