On Friday in Southern Ontario we had a major storm go through the areas, some of us had wind gusting at force 1 hurricane strength. We lost power twice on Friday, once for about 45 minutes & the second time for about 5 hours. Most thankful for the hydro crews working through the night to clear downed trees falling on to hydro lines, which was the major cause of power outages. Of all the downed trees, it seemed healthy evergreen trees fell from the roots pulling loose. Near us there is a stand of mostly dead trees & surprisingly enough there was only one knocked over. We did not loose any trees on our property, just lots of twigs & small branches down & all the roof shingles are still accounted for.
So my Five in Five On The 5th were actually taken in more than 5 minutes ... so give you 5 of the trees knocked down near me.

Yikes! We've seen similar things happen in our neighborhood over the years, but fortunately, not in the last year or so.
ReplyDeleteThey reported this morning (Monday) that Friday's storm's damage was almost equal to the BIG ice storm of December 2013. For an unseen element of nature, it is quite the power.
DeleteGosh this looks a scary time. Some trees have such shallow roots that you wonder what keeps them upright - clearly not a storm! The owner of the car was unlucky and I hope there were no casualties. Some of us have been enjoying a heatwave, I hope better weather reaches you soon and glad there was no damage to your home or garden.
ReplyDeleteThe wind was viscous in this storm & 3 people lost their lives. All 3 were clearing trees off hydro lines, 2 were struck by another falling tree. Sad. With today's (Monday) glorious sunshine the storm fades quickly from our minds.
DeleteWow! We get winds down here but nothing that strong lately. I'm glad your power outage wasn't any longer and that you didn't lose trees on your property. I hope the weather is kinder to you during the rest of the season.
ReplyDeleteMr Man hates the summer weather because he says it's weather that tries to relocate your house. I am also hoping & praying for calmer weather for the rest of the season. Rainstorms without the wind are ok.

ReplyDeleteIt's so sad when a well established tree is blown down, looks like you've had a lot of windy weather around there.
The car had many people lined up to take photos. There was also a tree down right across the road that had line ups for photos.

ReplyDeleteWhen we drove to visit my sister yesterday we saw so much more of the wind's destruction. I am most amazed at the number of evergreens toppled over from the roots. Need to look that up on the forestry website - I thought evergreens had deep roots.
