Currently Wondering About some recent "deep discussions" on social media.
Item 1: Blates: is this newly discovered or just a rebranding of what I grew up calling pasta plates? What is a Blate you ask. Short answer; a wide, shallow, rounded vessel for food that is a combination of a bowl & plate.
Is this just another social trend? But when thousands of Twitter users can agree on something, you have to wonder if they are on to something with the love child of a deep bowl & a flat plate mate & create the Blate. What do you think? Blates on your shopping list?
Item 2: Pineapple; it seems nothing creates bigger wars on Twitter than putting pineapple on a pizza & now it is war on pineapple in a pasta dish. Are you team pineapple on pizza & in pasta? Or pineapple for tropical drinks & desserts only? Me, I like pineapple on my pizza & we often grill pineapple rings for burger enhancement, both the meat burger of Mr Man & my veggie burger.

Item 3: Shirt Extenders: adjustable layering fake tops, lower sweep hem with elastic waist band. These are part of several new "fake" clothing items. Since the trend is to add layers to the overall look (it seems to be only for ladies right now) so rather than add the extra bulk of a full shirt, you slip the fake lower part of the shirt on & it gives the illusion. My example of the fake shirt extender is the plaid below. Something you would add to your wardrobe?
I think I like this trend. Although I haven't ordered one/two/three ... yet.
Yes, I am all in on blates - although you just introduced them to me. We call these pasta bowls, and I have a set of 2 Emma Bridgewater that hubby and I use for a lot more than pasta. I hate that they now have small cracks under the glaze just where the bottom turns up into the sides probably from the stress of putting them in the dishwasher. I have another set of 6 that are more bowl shaped that match my everyday china - we tend to use them as extra big soup bowls.
ReplyDeleteI like the look of the extended shirt, but I would only buy a top if it were actually attached. On second thought, I doubt this would be a flattering look for me unless I was much slimmer, so I will pass.
And I think you brave for being on Twitter. I find it distressful enough to listen to several podcasts that discuss current affairs and often pass on what the current Twitter "take" might be. I rarely find it to be center of the road, mainstream or even logical. It is always extreme on both ends of the spectrum.
Oh I'm not a Twitter user, quotes & info come in on my F/B feed & then I can go look, but not actually through Twitter. With most social media, I pick & choose slowly to wade through any current discussions; Twitter just seems too much like a mine field for me. :)
DeleteI used to be on team 'pineapple on a pizza' but have changed sides over the years! I don't think the shirt extender trend has arrived over here yet, but it seems like a good way of adding a layer without adding an inch to your waistline!
ReplyDeleteAt first I wasn't sure about the shirt extender, but I am starting to see the use. I just may have to buy one to see if my wardrobe life style improves!
DeleteI LOVE the idea of a shirt extender, especially if the top is floaty. I have been using pasta plates (Blates!!!) for over twenty years and last night had curry and sweet potato fries them. Heaven help us when they discover forks.
ReplyDeleteI have never been current with trends but my pasta bowls put me into leading the pack (lol).
DeleteI sure don’t mind pineapple on pizza, and a local food truck has a great coke slaw with a pineapple drizzle (if that is the right word).
ReplyDeleteI also chopped pineapple into my cole slaw salad.
DeleteI quite like pineapple on pizza, but I've never put it in pasta. Blate? Not for me, it's either a bowl or a plate. I'm not sure about the shirt extender thing, I think I'd need to see one worn in real life.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure about pineapple in pasta, but I am surprised at how many recipes I've seen it added to. I am certainly not going to be adding any more items to the cleared out cupboards, so I'll be out of dining fashion. Joshua Becker keeps telling me we are suppose to be reducing our wardrobes, but I do like the idea of not adding bulk of a shirt under a sweater. No wait, this is Canada, we like the warmth of bulk! (lol).
DeleteWell I still call them pasta bowls but yes, I like them. I like pineapple and very occasionally have it on pizza but usually prefer extra onions and mushrooms, so it doesn't really go. Yes, for the shirt extenders as well - they help cover up some of the fatter bits!!
ReplyDeleteOn my pizza it is mushrooms, onion (sweet) & pineapple, & I find that to be a delicious combo but Mr Man is a hard no on pineapple on his pizza. I am waffing back & forth on the extender, I'll look if I'm ever in the shops again, I'd like to try before I say a definite yes or no ... I have a couple of fake collars, so I'm not adverse to faking anything in the name of a good fashion look (col).
DeleteNever heard of blates and don't fancy shirt extenders but I do love pineapple on anything really. It's the contrast of sweet and succulent with more savoury flavours that I like.
ReplyDeleteI have been reading up on the health benefits of pineapple, just in case I need family defense of putting pineapple on my pizza & sliced up in coleslaw. (col).
DeleteI like the idea of Blates a lot, but I already have way too many dishes and am trying to figure out how downsize the number i already have. Much of it was inherited. It's lovely, but we don't use it. I like pineapple on pizza, but I've never given thought to grilling pineapple to have on burgers. I'll have to ask my SIL what he thinks of this idea. He's a big fan of pineapple. We'll be there next week, and I'm sure grilling will be involved.
ReplyDeleteYes do try the grilled pineapple rings (thinly sliced is best IMO) on your burgers. Like you, even after a cupboard purge there still seems to be more than enough dishes.
DeleteI wish people were willing to have more deep discussions on social media. Too often they are unwilling or are only willing to talk with people they agree with :(
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of a "blate" but am not sure where I'd store them lol Maybe where my plates are if Fiestaware starts making them... I like pineapple so will try it where I find it. That said, I never order it on pizza. I may never buy any more clothes lol but I like the extended shirt as an idea.
It is funny your mention discussions on social media; my thoughts of late have been that everyone seems to be either withdrawing from opinion or been outraged, nothing in between. Interesting to read your Tuesday post's comments.
DeleteWell, now, let's see - blates - I think I like them! I don't have any, though! What I have are soup plates and I use them for soup, pasta, salad, rice and curries, etc.
ReplyDeletePineapple - I've not had it with pasta, but, I'm definitely fond of it on my pizzas. We also make a curry with it and pickle it and when I eat it fresh, I always sprinkle salt and pepper on it, as we used to when I was growing up. :)
As for the shirt extenders - not really my style. I could see my daughter going for it, though. :
Fun post, Mary-Lou. :)
Bless I've had to point out to a few family members that get all squirrely about pineapple on burgers or pizza, that one of their favourite dishes is a sweet & sour chicken dish, that has big chunks of pineapple in it. I also like pineapple mango chutney.
DeleteI'm late here, for which apologies. Google has chucked me out of commenting on certain blogs, including my own. And yours, obviously. Yes I call these pasta bowls. I have some and like them. Don't need any more, rebranded or not! (Blates, indeed!) Quite like pineapple on pizza, if it is American, deep pan, but not on an Italian pizza. I like it grilled with gammon too. Probably not with burgers but never tried...
ReplyDeleteNo worries Lady Ella, Google has been rather a rude host to me as well. Pineapple on a pizza was first introduced by a pizzeria in Windsor Ontario & I think it was what you may call Italian pizza, not the deep crusty kind. Although my Italian friends say none of the pizzas outside of Naples are truly pizza (lol). This side of the pond we are now experimenting with croissant dough to make a pizza base!
