This week what I couldn't help but notice was the destruction of one of my finch feeders - that darn black squirrel. Mr Man has threatened to trap & re-locate him, although I worry that it's too late in the season to move him into another territory. Yes he drives me crazy, but I don't want bad things to happen to him, I just need him to stop being a destructive squirrel.

We have purchased a child's water gun to discourage him climbing up the feeder & moved the feeder more into the centre of the garden & away from the trees and/or fence used for launching purposes. Bad Squirrel!
We have the black squirrels too - but they have been detoured by having one of those cone shaped baffles on the pole that supports five feeders - they get cranky, but it keeps them away - and there are plenty of seeds to gather up off the ground for them. We also use metal feeders - they can't chew through the ones we have -thank goodness.
ReplyDeleteWe have given some thought to the metal ones, but then the winter is so harsh on them. We have a pole that has a squirrel baffle on it & ready to go into the ground - I will not give up my bird feeders as we SO enjoy the many birds. Mr Black maybe a native but he needs to go find something else to chew on!
DeleteNaughty boy. We don't have black squirrels but we do have (imported) greys and I would love to see them completely eradicated.
ReplyDeleteThe reds & blacks are native to our area, the grey is not but here to stay. We have decided that we will not throw peanuts for them anymore (except for Charlie but he's old & probably our last winter with him). Even the chipmunks are getting too much - they have dug up 3 of my pots. I know the season is winding down but there's at least another month to enjoy patio pots. Yes the word eradication is quickly becoming a word I am using!
DeleteWe have problems with chipmunks on occasion, but the squirrels haven't been much of a problem the last couple of years. Most of our feeders are "squirrel-proof" and seem to work well. No black squirrels here, only gray ones.
ReplyDeleteWe got a squirrel baffle for the feeder tree, but my naughty black is leaping from the fence or trees on to the top of the feeder - he is quite determined. This morning we watched him leap & miss about 4 times before he realigned & was successful. We are doing mind battles with this one - he's crafty!

ReplyDeleteHe is a naughty one for sure. Part of me admires his resourcefulness at getting what he wants - but that part is being won over with "you have to go".
DeleteWe live between two areas of woodland and squirrels are an absolute pest. They take the nuts from our walnut tree and eat them or plant them in my flower pots. They may look cute but they drive me mad!
ReplyDeleteThanks for dropping by. We have black walnut trees planted by the squirrels - I usually dig up while small but I missed one & now Mr Man needs to take the saw to it. Black walnuts aren't for eating by people.
DeleteI thought it was monkey to begin with. He looks and behaves like one. I know what solution the farmer would suggest but you don't want to hear that!
ReplyDeleteI know The Farmer's suggestion & trust me there would be several in the neighbourhood that would want to the solution. Maybe the squirrels are our versions of monkeys & I don't like monkeys.
