Me On A Monday - August 30th

Good Morning .  I hope that every one is doing well.  A little bit of a catch up; I had a good birthday, low key. My carrot cake was good & in the end I did not colour the cream cheese icing. It felt a little strange not putting candles in the holders, but there's no more blowing across a cake.  I had candles off to the side so I could make my birthday wish. Also, I don't think I've ever had a square birthday cake before!  I had lots of very kind people remember me on my birthday with cards & other forms of messages - all very much appreciated.

I'm not sure if anyone else is doing this, but I have found my self on several occasions in the last month matching what I'm going to wear with my face mask.  Is this the new normal for styling?

One of our leading doctors on the regional COVID task force issued a warning on August 27th, in one of her twice a week F/B messages in response to the COVID-19 4th wave rising new cases & hospitalizations,    " We should be avoiding indoor social gatherings unless everyone in the room is fully vaccinated & asymptomatic.  We must avoid outdoor gatherings where people are in close contact & the vaccine status of everyone in the group is unknown.  Wear masks in all public spaces."

I can now fully understand why many are wanting vaccine passports, which for Canadians isn't that unusual; all through school we were issued yellow vaccine (measles, mumps, chickenpox, etc) cards that had to be produced for attendance at school.  No one complained about that.

My garden is really struggling with the 2 1/2 weeks without rain although as I write this, Sunday night, there's a possibility of a storm with rain coming through.  Fingers crossed.

Now having said that about my garden, I have been able to keep my flower pots watered, using my 4 rain barrels (now empty) & the water from our dehumidifier (indoors).  My 5 pots of morning glories are all doing well.  Lots of variety in colours in each pot.

And I'll leave you with this thought ... "I was asked recently, if I had plans for the fall; it took me a while to realize they were asking me about Autumn & not the fall of society."

  1. Happy belated birthday wishes coming your way!

I laughed out loud when I read that last sentence! :)

    1. It seems the term "fall" is more & more often used for references to Autumn; we are not amused by that. Laughter is what I was going for. Thanks for the wishes.

  2. Your birthday cake was lovely, and I imagine, quite tasty, too! We had Morning Glories for a few years, but they were never as beautiful as yours. The last quote is disturbing, to say the least, especially given the situation in Afghanistan. We're living in a fragile world in so many ways.

    1. The cake was very rich, so I have scraped off the icing & frozen 3/4 of it in 3 chunks for further delights. I agree Afghanistan is a fragile situation; very worrying. My comment was more to the reference of "the fall" being used more & more in our language rather than the term of Autumn :)

  3. Belated happy birthday! Good idea to freeze some of that delicious looking cake for future treats.
It's always interesting to see how other countries are dealing with restrictions, and I think it will be a while before I feel comfortable in a crowd. Like you, I do feel like I am starting to think about which mask to wear depending on what I am wearing!

    1. I've seen a few things online for sale that have the dress/blouse with a matching mask - now that's marketing! Thanks for the B/D wishes, I'll be using a chunk of the cake for Mr Man's birthday next month!

  4. Happy Birthday. I'm glad you had candles even if they weren't on the cake. My friend at work co-ordinates all her outfits with her mask. Me, I wear a paper one to limit my glasses fogging up so no co-ordinating for me apart from which side to wear it. Blue or white :0)

    1. Thanks for the B/D wishes. Oh yes candles are a must for wishes, 3, 1 for the past, 1 for now, 1 for future. I, so far, haven't had too much problem with fogging of my glasses but if I wear sunglasses, there's a little foggy time.

    1. Me too. I would hope that our province hurries along with this.

  6. I liked your quote - it gave me a chuckle! I just wear the same mask all the time. A friend made me two identical, and I alternate them.

    1. Since we are going to probably be sometime since requiring masks, I've developed quite the wardrobe of masks, including seasonal ones (lol). The Autumn vs fall drives me a little crazy but yes the world has bigger issues right now.

  7. Belated Happy Birthday! So pleased you had cake - it feels important to celebrate things right now ... though your comment about 'fall' made me hoot (yes, things can feel quite apocalyptic). I'm double-masking myself, with a disposable one inside one of my boring white ones: no dressing-up for me!

    1. Most of my masks have the pocket for the filter making them 3 layers of protection, those that don't have the pocket, I wear a disposable one underneath. I've recently had an encounter that has me feeling very unsure about people adhering to the rules. Thank you for the b-day wishes - I agree celebrating what we can is SO important.

  8. I'm glad you were able to celebrate your birthday with that delicious looking cake and candles off to the side! I have two fabric masks that I made myself, patterned fabric on one side, solid color on the other side, and I usually wear them with a disposable mask, as well. Unless I am wearing one of my N95 masks. But, I like the idea of having some seasonal masks! I must check my fabric stash to see what seasonal fabric I have! Over here, Autumn is usually called Fall and, from what I've read, apparently that was the term that was in use in Britain when the first English speakers arrived in the North American Colonies. I love how languages change or remain the same over the years. :)

    1. I too love language & speech, it is one of our most often confused & fraught with problems - the art of communication is truly that, an art. I did not know that the settling British called Autumn fall, I always attributed fall as a totally American expression - thanks for sharing that.

  9. Your cake turned out beautiful! Well done. My sister put sparklers on mine thus year so I didn't need to blow on it (we are three households of course). Did you share your cake with other households? Glad my card arrived on time. You got a good crop.
I have five or six different fabric masks as well as a stock of disposable ones. However I'm not very fussy about which mask I use when. I keep one in my car, one in my bag and one by the door. Main thing is never to be without when required.

    1. Thanks again for the lovely card. The card display was taken down today; I felt very blessed to receive so many. Outside of immediate family there was no sharing. I guess the best mask is the one you have on :)

  10. That last bit made me chuckle - but I have to admit that it was a nervous laugh. I think I may adopt Autumn exclusively instead of Fall which we more commonly use here in the US, and more appropriately so here lately!

    1. I'm probably using Autumn 95% of the time. I've read about 10 Google searches that claim to know the history of the two terms - interesting reading. I particularly liked the "spring flowers, fall leaves" which was referring to how the signs of each season create the action of springing to life, & falling off.

    1. Thank you, I've been reliving the day in sorting through photos for printing & thankfully no calories in this celebration method! :)

  12. I just wear whichever mask is handy when I need to wear one. I keep a couple by the front door, some in the car, and some in my bag.

The birthday cake looks delicious ... I hope you enjoyed it xx

    1. The birthday cake was quite tasty, but a little rich for too much. In the freezer now for future celebrations! I have the disposable masks in case in the car but I find the fabric masks more comfortable & prettier :)

  13. Happy Birthday (a little after the fact :))! That cake looks yummy.

Oh yes, I've been matching my mask to my outfit from the first. LOL Luckily we don't get out much so I don't have to stand in the closet and try to figure out what to wear that will match one of the masks.

    1. I do not let the mask stand in my way of being co-ordinated (lol). Thanks for the b-day wishes, the cake, which 3/4 got frozen, will have a replay for Mr Man's birthday later this week.
