Me On A Monday - August 29th

Good Morning, I trust everyone is doing well & enjoyed a good weekend.  I am enjoying the self seeded Cosmos blooming in the patio garden & oh my, are they tall & abundant.  There are two clumps that seeded themselves from last year's Cosmos. As the blooming progressed, the hot pink blooms became the prominent colour.

Currently Listening: to Joshua Becker, The Minimalist, uTube talks about using & being part of social media.  I know that our good blog friend, Susanne over at Snaps & Snippets also mentioned this uTube in her August 22nd post.  As usual, Joshua, who has great hair, made some really interesting points. IMO His 10 rules for using social media make a lot of sense; not sure I currently adhere to all these guidelines as yet, but my goal is to make more of an effort.  I think #1 applies to my use of our community F/B groups as I tend to scroll through days of missed posts. No more, I give it 5 minutes, tops, to read & then close it down. I like #5 & #8, being that #8 is that you don't say as a faceless keyboard warrior what you wouldn't say in person.  #10!

🌸1. Jump in, jump out  🌸2 Create don’t just consume 🌸3 use platforms you enjoy the most  🌸 4 change the culture of social media rather then been change by it 🌸5 take an extended break   🌸6 don’t compare your worst to their best 🌸7 read more then headlines (my note is to beware of click bait headlines)  🌸8 keep the same standards online as you do in person 🌸9 seek to understand those with different opinions   🌸10 privacy is still nice, so keep boundaries of what you choose to share or not share online.

Currently Reading: I am currently into book 8 of a series; Dr Ruth Galloway, written by Elly Griffith.  I am enjoying this series of light murder mysteries, although I must admit to being just a little annoyed at times with the main character, Dr Ruth Galloway, Archeologist; I've been heard to remark out loud, "oh for heaven's sake, Ruth, don't do that" much to Mr Man's shock/amusement.  There are currently 14 books in the series.  It was my Louise Penny Fandom F/B page that recommended the series while we all wait for Louise's latest release in November.  I am #1 on the library request list.

I've just finished a book that Karen at Random Reflections recommended to me in a comment to one of my Me On A Monday posts (thank you Karen).  Deb at Deb' s World , August 23rd post, also read & reviewed; The Measure by Nikki Erlick.  The Measure is Nikki's debut novel.  I would recommend this book.  I don't want to say too much so as not to give it all away, but at page 256, paragraph 7,  I let out an audible sob - this caught me in a way I wasn't expecting & I've re-read that paragraph several times, which made me teary. I cared about all the characters in this book & I liked how connections were made to each character.

Currently WatchingHouse of The Dragon, for us, is on Crave TV, started on the 21st & I am invested in this 10 episoide series. We signed up for this extra channel just for this series & will cancel once the last dragon flies.  To get our monies worth of this TV subscription, we also watch; Belfast; The Eyes of Tammy Faye & Downton Abbey-The New Era.  We were not impressed with Belfast or D.A.'s New Era, although Maggie Smith was true to her character & was fabulous. Tammy Faye, while I am sure a white wash of her life, had surprisingly good acting, Jessica Chastain was fantastic & deserved her Oscar (IMO).

And I will leave you with this thought ... while I cannot save the world, I will savor as much as I can each day   ... me paraphrasing EB White.

  1. Love that final thought! Your Cosmos are beautiful. I love the variation in the three you showcase in your photo. My cutting garden is beginning to wind down a bit. The Shasta daisies are almost gone, but there are still zinnias and a few others. I had enough for two bouquets to bring into the house. I'm glad you liked The Measure. I've continued to think about it. As for social media, I stay away from FaceBook for the most part---never post. I do post on Instagram, but my community there is almost solely card makers and watercolor artists. There's almost never any content of political or controversial nature. And, for the first time, I did take a long break while we were gone, and have yet to get back to it.

    1. My gardens are all looking so tired, especially in today's humidity & I fight the urge to start cutting back or emptying the pots already. I have turned off notifications for my F/B page, I find easier to ignore for days, which is my move to maybe tune out of it completely. It can definitely pull at my strings of FOMO.

  2. Your Cosmos are lovely ... mine from last year died over the winter.
I'm sorry you didn't enjoy Belfast, I thought it was great.

    1. I can take no credit in these glorious flowers, my only part is that I did not confuse them for weeds when they initially sprouted. Two of my friends shake their head at me not enjoying Belfast as they also enjoyed. :)

  3. The Measure really was thought provoking wasn't it?
Some good advice for using social media here, things that we should all take on board.

    1. The Measure is a book that has me thinking about the theme long after I finished the book. It is a book I will re-read. I picked up Still Life today at the library.

  4. I'm a fan of plants that self-seed lol I should try cosmos. I have followed some minimalist sites, including that YouTube channel, and have found them helpful. Especially as I get older I find it easier to embrace the concept.

    1. I like Joshua Becker as he isn't too preachie about things & he makes short uTube videos, which I like. I am going to try to get these cosmos to "self seed" in another part of the garden, at the back as they get quite tall. I marvel that they came back in abundance.

    1. Oh, now I am nervous that you will like since you bought the book. It is a book I will read again. I shall be anxious to hear your review of it.

    1. My break has me thinking a lot of about my own social media use & where I'd like to go or not go with it. These cosmos are all nature's gift, I can claim no hand in them, other than not mistaking them for weeds at the beginning of the season :)

  7. I like how combos pop up where they choose and always look good in doing so.

I like Ruth Galloway too. I think I’ve missed a few over the years, but I’ve read most. The endings can be somewhat predictable, but I’ll leave it at that.

As for 5 minutes on social media, that more or less works, but not for Blogger or Flickr. Especially as I sit this morning catching up on too many posts.

    1. Because Blogger is mis-behaving again, I find I'm on this platform longer than I use to be. I don't use Flickr. The self seeded Cosmos have on one plant a variety of colours & colour combos - I just love nature's design.

  8. We've another rain today. I hope our flowers will last a bit longer.
