Me On A Monday - September 6th

It is a holiday Monday here in Canada - Labour Day.  With this holiday there is a little normalcy returning to life in Ontario; Labour Day has always been the day before school returns & this year most schools & most kids will be returning in class learning.  There's some celebration required for this!  Ontario has done a fairly good job getting kids between the ages of 12-17 years fully vaccinated before the return to school & bravo to those kids rolling up their sleeves.  Now if we could only get adults in the 20-39 years range to co-operate, but that's a tale for another post.

Currently Watching:  a very quirky comedy/drama, called The Detectorists (Acorn TV).  Mr Man & I found all the characters a little charming & funny.  In real life we know a few people just like the lead two.   We have season 2 of 3 seasons on order from the library.  We are just beginning season 3 & the final season of 800 Words.  I've not found this characters charming or quirky but mostly endearingly annoying.  We also finished up Sunday with season 7 of Foyle's War. Season 8 of Foyle's War shows "in transit" on the library website.

Currently Reading: well in this case it was actually listening to a book. I don't normally do audio books as I always fall asleep while listening, but with the latest release of Louise Penny's book, The Madness of Crowds, it was the only way I could get an in on the initial release.  I do have my name down at the library for the book & as of Saturday morning I was #14 on 21 copies. Everyone gets 3 weeks to read a book, so I am most hopeful for some rapid reading & timely returns!  My initial listening of  The Madness of Crowds, was it was not Louise's best, but again it could be the listening rather than the reading that has my opinion skewed.  It felt like she was trying to deal with too many world current affairs & tie them all together with her usual characters.  I remain open to change my opinion.

Currently On The De-clutter Front: finally found a donation site that is taking clothes & household items. Several bags of clothes & several boxes of things were all taken to this site on Saturday.

And I'll leave you with this photo of a very cute puppy that we have been invited around to to meet later this morning.  He is cute ...

... he belongs to previous neighbours who we are still friends with.

  1. I find with audio books that the voice of the reader(s) make a huge difference to my enjoyment of the book. There are some that I strongly disliked on audio but loved when I read it later so I hope that's the same for you this time.

I didn't get on with the Detectorists but have only ever watched the first couple of programmes ... maybe I gave up too soon? I'm watching the new series of Vera, currently showing on Sunday nights, which is just as good as it usually is.

Love the puppy! Will you cats like him?

    1. We are going to the puppy's house to meet, so my cats don't have to worry. We are big fans of Vera so cannot wait for season 11 to be shown this side of the pond. The man reading The Madness of The Crowds had a very soothing voice, but I could not listen while in bed, I had to be sitting up in my reading spot (col). I am most hopeful that reading will have me feel/think differently about the book.

  2. 800 Words is quirky. I haven't minded it, but it drives Sue a little bit crazy.

Have you seen that Prime is now filming the new Gamache series? We'll see it sometime in '22.

    1. I did see that news about the Gamache series - I think Alfred Molina is a good choice, although not sure how he'll handle the British accent on a French Canadian (col). I yell at many of the characters on 800 Words, especially George, poor hapless George...

  3. I'm not a fan of audio books unless we're in the car (and then they're usually chosen by The Boy), because I find that I've been distracted and somehow missed hearing a whole chapter of a critical part of the plot!
    That's a very cute puppy. :)

    1. I had to replay the "book" over at several places, not the way I want to enjoy my books. Sometimes saying a phrase out loud after reading an especially significant piece just tastes delicious. The German Shepherd puppy was adorable & he followed me around the gardens. :)

  4. Well I am going to have to look for The Detectorists. I loved Foyle's War and think I have all seasons on DVD. It may be time to revisit those again, although I am debating whether I should get rid of all my DVDs. Most of the one I have are series that were on Acorn or PBS, and I have gotten my money's worth watching and rewatching them.

    The pup is adorable.

    1. Oh I could never part with some of the DVDs, some of the movies or series are like revisiting with friends when I watch again & again. I am most grateful that our library has a huge Acorn & PBS collection. Sniper, the pup was ever so sweet, needle like puppy teeth!

  5. Cute puppy!
I fall asleep too easily listening to podcasts so I don't think I'd manage a whole audio book. We enjoyed the Detectorists, they are certainly a couple of quirky characters aren't they?

    1. I am hopeful that series two of The Detectorists is as quirky fun as series 1. I would sit with them at the pub on quiz night! Puppy had the softness fur & sharpest teeth!

  6. We tried The Detectorists but didn't stick with it. I've seen and enjoyed Foyle. Kitchens is always worth watching :) What a cute puppy!

    1. Michael Kitchen is a favourite & I often though of him as Chief Inspector Gamache in the Louise Penny books, but for the Netflix series they have cast Alfred Molina as Gamache.

    2. I hadn't heard about that series. I'll keep an eye out for it. Thanks!

    4. I adore Louise Penny's books. IMO you do need to start at the beginning with Still Life & go forward in order. Each book is its own plot but it is the character development that requires in order reading otherwise you'll miss out why does a 80+ drunk woman have a duck ... & the duck is a character! The Netflix series is for next year.

    5. Maybe I'll start with the books and not wait for the series ;) It is interesting how some book series need you to start at the beginning while with others it doesn't matter. That's nice to know before you start. Thanks for the heads-up :)

  7. Who wouldn't love a puppy? Any puppy! What kind is he? I guess he'll be a big dog...?

Despite Eileen (or someone) mentioning Vera last week, I forgot to watch or tape it and only by chance managed to catch up with the second episode on +1 yesterday. Now set to record the whole series ... and I will try to remember to find episode 1 on catch-up. Oh the stressful life I lead!

    Have a good week.

    1. He's a 9 week old German Shepherd puppy & yes he'll be big. My friend gets all her shepherds from the same breeder of which I have met all my friend's dogs. This little guy was ever so sweet. I don't think my two fur girls would have been happy to have him as an addition to the family. (lol).

  8. PS Never listened to an audio book but sometimes they have books being read, in serialised form, on the radio and I can get quite sucked in if I turn it on when driving... Only I have never listened to one from beginning to end!!

    1. The audio book was tough going for me as I had to replay because I fell asleep or I needed to rehear a line or paragraph. It does confirm I'm a reader. I don't think I could manage listening to a book & driving - driving out there is crazy times & needs my full attention. We need to now teach people about turn signals!

  9. It's Labor Day Holiday Monday, here, too! But, most schools started in August and some have since closed due to high Covid numbers! Really cute puppy, but, those teeth can be quite sharp as you found out! :D

    1. The school boards are all hopeful that safety precautions taken keep COVID cases down & keep the schools open. We also have a fairly high rate of fully vaccinated staff & students & they still have to mask & keep 2 metres apart. Fingers crossed all this helps keep the kids in class.

  10. One of my book groups is reading The Dutch House which I read two years ago when it first came out. I remembered the themes but not the details so I'm listening too it this time around. Tom Hanks is the reader, and I'm really enjoying it. That is one adorable puppy. My daughter had to put down her beloved dog of 15+ years last week. As soon as they get settled in the new house, they'll be looking for a new dog.

    1. Oh Karen I am sorry about your daughter's dog, our pets are more than just animals, they are family. Our friend's puppy is adorable, but oh so much work (col). I think Tom Hanks reading would be wonderful, he has such a lovely voice.
