Me On A Monday - June 7th

Good Morning Everyone.  I hope that the weather played nicely in your area to contribute to a great weekend.

Our weekend was very hot & humid, lots of  heat warnings out.

Currently Thankful: looks like another summer of house/garden/POOL sitting.  I enjoyed my first swim of the season on Saturday & it was bloody marvelous!

Currently Off The Patio:  we were able to get off our own patio & see something else.  I really have no idea what our status is in the province, are we allowed about?  Or is it still just out & about for medical appointments & grocery shopping?  So under these  parameters as I had a mammogram scheduled which isn't too far from one of our previous favourite wandering spots, we took some time to visit the river park after my appointment. In the first photo is a family of Canada geese wandering through the gardens.  We were one of the few that were wearing masks.  Our chief medical officer for the region says it is very important to wear a mask even when out walking, especially in the popular parks, as the Delta (India) variant is extremely contagious.

Currently Watching:  Over the last several weeks we have watched several British series which we got from the library. Two of the series,  I am sure had the intention of being more, but alas two were one hit wonders.

Delicious - was 3 series & it was delightful, starring Dawn French.  There were a few times that some of the characters were obnoxious, but it was also part of the character development; over all I'd say the characters worked & the Cornwall scenery definitely a star of the series.  Oh & the food was fantastic, we were hungry during each episode. Poldark with Aidan Turner,  also featured the gorgeous scenery of Cornwall.  I want to go to Cornwall.

Girlfriends -  only 1 series & I can absolutely see why. IOO, it was bloody awful. While the cast are all stars, the writing just didn't hit the mark.  I don't think the writer knew what she wanted from this series; comedy, tragedy, drama.  Although it was really nice to see Matthew Lewis as other than Neville Longbottom from the Harry Potter movies.

Love, Lies & Records - another 1 series wonder.  The first 3 episodes were very good; liked the stories woven around the main characters. We were invested.  The last 3 episodes were horrible & we  thought someone other than the original writer of the first 3 episodes were writing the last 3 episodes. Same writer all the way through.  Kay Mellor is the writer/producer of both Girlfriends & Love, Lies & Records.  And yes, I know she's critically acclaimed as a writer ... I'll say no more.

Currently In The Garden:  no words are necessary. (1) Star of Bethlehem (2) white Bearded Iris (3) Bleeding Heart with bumble bee

Currently Looking: for a written down version of my Mom/Gran's potato salad recipe.  I cannot find one, but then again I always make from memory.  My Mom would boil the potatoes with their skins on, then peel the skins off, potatoes would be firm & just fork tender, then she would cube the potatoes into bite size portions, she would pour pickle juice over the warm potatoes, leave for a few moments & then drain thoroughly. She would add: chopped up hard boiled eggs, slice radishes, chopped pickles, preferably gherkins,  add horseradish, just a titch, grainy mustard, chopped green onions (the white part only) & then salad dressing (mao) stir to blend. A few times I remember her adding finely chopped celery.  All the quantities are to taste. I also switch individual grainy mustard & horseradish ingredients for horseradish grainy mustard & I do use low fat salad dressing.  I prefer to use gherkins rather than dill, I like the sweetness of gherkins.

And I'll leave you with this thought; "some days kicking ass looks just like barely holding on but it's OK, because it is still kicking ass."

  1. Very interesting to see how others make their potato salads. I've never heard of adding horseradish before, but I do add a bit of pickle juice to mine. I agree with not knowing exactly what we are allowed to do, or what's open, or when things will open... And please stop giving different names to what's happening: stages, phases, lockdown, putting on the brakes, green, orange, red zones... But your flowers are lovely - especially those white irises! -Jenn

    1. I agree Jenn, I've tried to be supportive of our Premiere, but I just can't anymore. With everything that is happening & reported on this past weekend, makes me feel like everyone has given up on living in a respectful, law abiding society. It's chaos on every front! ... Mary-Lou

  2. Are you prevented from online streaming due to limitations on rural internet access?

    1. live streaming chews up ALOT of band width & yes being rural it isn't readily available unless you are willing to pay more. BUT, we are hopeful that soon we will be getting a bigger better service to our little village ...

  3. The weather here was rainy ... again! We've had soooooo much rain the past month that I feel waterlogged even indoors. LOL

Thanks for sharing your mom's recipe!

  4. Happy summertime swimming :) Around here masks are no longer required unless a particular business requires them. And none are. I'm still wearing mine. That park looks like a lovely, refreshing spot. I need a written recipe. My hubby eats potato salad, but I don't like it so never learned to make it. Beautiful flowers! Anything that attracts the pollinators :)

    1. My sister who lived in Tennessee for awhile made a type of potato salad that seemed more like mashed potatoes, but her husband swore it was the way it was made (lol). I don't think masks here will be going any where for a while. These variants are triple lethal.

  5. I make several different kinds of potato salad. Yours sounds a lot like the one my mother made. I love pickles in mine, but Tracy is not a fan. He would, however, be a huge fan of a bit of horseradish in the dressing which I will definitely try!

    1. I was never a fan of the horseradish, but my Mom's kitchen rule was take it or go hungry (col). The horseradish in the mustard is quite mild & has now swayed me.

  6. Always interesting to see other people's potato salad recipes. Never heard of adding horseradish before though! It's getting to be the season where these kind of recipes come out - we had potato salad with smoked mackerel last week and it was so nice to eat it outside.
It's so confusing to know what you can and cannot do isn't it? They keep moving the goalposts! We are supposed to be totally back to normal in two weeks time, that is never going to happen, I think we need a more gradual approach. I'm quite ok with the way things are with the slight easing of restrictions at the moment to be honest, so I will take things one step at a time no matter what!

    1. Well based on the party activity in my neighbourhood on Sunday you would never know anything was in place about the maximum number allowed at your home, outside - it's 5. We are just living like it's still all locked down & other than not being able to go into stores yet, I'm quite OK with that.

  8. I love potato salad! Definitely with gherkins!

Beautiful flowers, and oh how true is that last quote?

    1. Re: the quote, it is certainly reflective of my mood (col). I do need to put gherkins on the shopping list & then make another batch of potato salad. I'm also in the mood for some cold pasta salad.

  9. I'm off the opinion, if in doubt, put your mask on. :)
I haven't seen any of those TV programs or if I have, I don't remember them!

    1. Masks are still mandatory here & I cannot see that been lifted any time soon. The selection of shows this side of the pond, I think for the most part are horrible, too much violence for my tastes.

  10. That's a lovely looking potato salad recipe (though I'll pass on the horseradish), and it must be lovely looking at those fresh and pretty flowers. The Delta variant is on the rise here but no-one wears a mask outdoors - only in shops and shopping centres; like Debs14, I'd be quite happy for things to open up at a gentler pace, keeping an eye on how the variants are developing here.

    1. I will not be rushing to shop indoors just yet, especially since we have been warned about the 4th wave & subsequent lockdown to go with it. More vaccines please.

  11. I hope your mammogram results will be good. I'm glad you were able to stop by the river park, afterwards. It looks like a really nice park. Your garden flowers look beautiful. I didn't grow up eating potato salad, but, I love it now. I can't seem to make one that I like, so, I just buy mine from the grocery store's deli!

    1. I've tried a few from the shops, but they put too much pepper in for my sensitive tastes. My salad that I prefer to purchase rather than make is coleslaw & I only like a few times, I only need to add pineapple to the coleslaw to make it perfect :)

  12. I'm glad you were able to get out and about. I makes such a change to just going for groceries or an appointment and it makes you feel so much better. I hope the mammogram comes back OK.
I watched Girlfriends too, but couldn't take it seriously as I kept seeing Mrs Hughes from Downton Abbey :0)

    1. That's too funny about seeing Mrs Hughes. For me, her character in Girlfriends, I just kept yelling, "cut that hair, tie that hair back, style that hair ..." it was like the hair became a character, a really bad one in a bad story line ...
